Three Legendary Moon T-shirt .. A Post-Mortem?

We all remember Three Wolf Moon—a classic meme that caught the internet by storm and never really seemed to die down. The meme itself has been parodied over and over, almost to a sickening amount. And honestly, I didn’t care much for the meme either. Until my Pokemon craze fired up again, in which I —along with some friends— thought: “Now why hasn’t anyone done a Pokemon version of Three Wolf Moon yet?”

So then comes the above illustration. I didn’t just want to pick any three Pokemon, or even any normal moon for that matter. I went with the legendary dog/cat-like trio Raikou, Entei, and Suicune, and the iconic Lunatone as the moon. Things came together surprisingly well for a combination of a silly meme and a legendary international franchise! Then came the influx of messages begging for it to be made into a t-shirt and quite a while afterward, Three Legendary Moon was available on Rosevine.spreadshirt.com.

But just two days ago, I received a message from the Spreadshirt Team removing my shirt design and warning about copyright protection. I looked in on Fair Use a little before posting the shirt online, and was even hesitant about posting it, knowing that a depiction of any Pokemon in a work for profit was risky. But at the time, I was banking on the Fair Use terms that protected works of parody. Also, it’s not a real Three Wolf Moon parody if you can’t wear it!

Now, (I’m not even sure if I’m writing this as a word of warning for designers or as a call for advice) I fully understand Spreadshirt’s reasoning. Chances are, they wouldn’t be sued by the Pokemon Company, but better safe than sorry. I tried to keep the representation different enough from the Pokemon style (different coloring style and imagined poses to fit Three Wolf Moon) to the extent that it becomes my own intellectual property. But I’m probably not going to take my chances with other t-shirt printing websites; instead I’ll produce my own copies at home, to distribute to a lucky few.

Finally, I want to thank everyone that supported the design, everyone who bought a shirt, and really anyone who thought it was funny. I even want to thank those of you who rolled your eyes and complained about the bland over-use of the Three Wolf Moon meme! Hopefully I can get some more original designs in my shop soon!

When under attack, it takes on a secondary form by twisting and contorting bubbles of trapped air in a vortex around its vulnerable, fish-like body.
